A message is a course of action—physical or symbolic—taken by a party in order to change another’s beliefs or preferences.

The effectiveness of a message depends on five factors.

(1) The reasons it gives for the desired change in preferences or beliefs;

(2) The evidence it gives to support those reasons;

(3) Its comprehensibility by the recipient;

(4) The appropriateness of its emotional tone;

(5) Its coordination between all units belonging to the sender.
